The fondant on the cake...

So, step 2 - fondant. Why fondant you ask? Well, it just seems a bit easier to me than buttercream and I've always preferred the look of a fondant cake.

On to google...for those interested in making fondant, check this out. I made a marshmellow fondant based on this and I was actually pretty surprised how fun it was! I must say, the one thing to note: just when you think you couldn't possibly add any more powdered sugar...add about a pound more.

The whole point of this whole exercise was to make the cake and put the fondant on the cake. Mission accomplished.

Now the blue little extra decoration was a result of having a bunch of leftover fondant and blue icing on hand... Ever wonder what mixing fondant and icing makes? Marble fondant!!

Now...I still need to actually assemble a real cake. Complete with the filling, crumb coat, and dowels. Good, good times. :)

The fondant on your trial cake looks really good. Good job. Sounds like you are getting into the cake baking. I think Jason has lots of dowels from when he baked his own wedding cake for his reception here so if you don't have that, you might want to borrow that from him.
