VERY scary Halloween cake...

Here's the scoop - I can't post pics, because yea...it was that scary!!

So, I decided this cake would be two tiered. I dusted off my 12 inch cake pan, did two layers of that size. Then I baked two layers for the top tier, which was 9 inch. Now, while all these cake shows on TV will show fun, creative people making crazy, fun cakes...let me just say, the elusive baking part is NOT FUN. And not only is it not fun, but it's so time consuming.

And let me just elaborate (complain) on that a bit more. It's not only the cake layers you have to make, oh no... once that's done, then you have to worry about icing and fillings. THEN, if you're a beginner (me), just cross your fingers that you've made enough to cover/fill the cake...

As you might have guessed by now...my cake didn't turn out well. :( I spent most of the week baking (or at least, that's the way it felt). I spent my Friday night making the final layer and icing (which completely fell apart).

So anyways, to recap...

My planned two tiered stacked Halloween cake ended up being two separate cakes due to a shortage of time (no time to go out and buy dowels for stacking). I had actually even bought fondant to save time - but that ended up being a disaster as well since I tried to color it and made for sloppy fondant.

All in all, a big setback to my cake making hopes. I'm going to back to basics now. Goal now is to master the basics: small cakes, simple buttercream, store-bought fondant.

The red velvet one and the one we took home before that were really good! Don't let the Halloween cake shoot down your confidence in cake making. Everyone has to go through some trial and error now and then. Oh, and you can probably delete that Anonymous comment below. I've never seen anyone spam via commenting before, that's a new one.

Thanks Tulip, and as much as the viagra comment was helpful to my cake mission...I deleted it.
