What's wrong with Boy Scouts??...

Now, I remember the really funny SNL skit w/ Alec Baldwin...but is that really the reputation they have?? Here's the thing, I thought it'd be great to put Ty's into Boy Scouts. Lord knows I can't show him how to build a fire... However, someone is dead set against the idea. What's the deal...can anyone enlighten me as to how being a Boys Scout could be bad thing?

well...the boy scouts do get a bad rap b/c of a few bad seeds. i'm sure, like most organizations, they are fine across the majority. however, if what you're looking for is tyler to learn survival skills, like making a fire, fishing, etc - another altnerative to boy scouts is to take him camping periodically (maybe a few times a year, to places other than burke lake). and, if you're not comfortable taking him by yourself - have someone who's knowledgeable in that capacity go with you guys (i.e. adam, etc). i personally think that would be a better alternative to the boy scouts because then he's learning from you or from someone you know well. but, that's my opinion - so, take it for what it's worth.

Duly noted, good points. I guess my main reasoning for wanting to put him in Boy Scouts is so he can be around boys and learn how to do fun 'boy-ish' stuff. And, of course, making a friend or two while he's at it. True, it'd be nice to take him out and show him myself but that'd require me to learn how to do all that stuff!! yikes... :-D

well...he'll meet friends and do "boy-ish" stuff through friends he meets at school, t-ball, etc, and through the normal course of growing up as a boy.

translation: boy scouts costs money...save it to spend on significant others :) i was in the cub scouts and don't have any bad memories so it must have been fun, right? and nothing beats bonding while making your car for the pinewood derby. start studying up on your aerodynamics.

Aerodynamics?! Man, I'm just having a hard enough time w/ fall factors in climbing! Well, I have been fishing recently and just got over actually holding the fish (hey, they were slimy!!). Anyhow, I still would like to put Ty's in it even if it's just for Cub Scouts if nothing else. I'll just tell Ty's to not tell anyone...ha!

I agree with swiftkick! It is a big committment....FOR YOU! A good Cub troop always has something going on especially weekends. He will love the Pinewood derby. It really is a little guy thing! Wish we all lived nearby so we could help out!

Hey I thought that's usually starts in 1st grade for Boy's Scouts though. Kai wants to be in it but did not hear the offer for that club at his school and yet the girls scouts had their sign up for it. My coworker mentioned it was in 1st grade that she was able to sign up her son for it.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to see what I can do to at least have him try it. I believe it all starts in 1st grade anyway, so I have a year to convince 'someone'. :-)

I have much to update on da blog...stay tuned!
